April 15th 1865
Dear mother I received kind and welcome letter to day and was glad to here from you. I am well as usual I have not herd from frank since the advance on richmond he is with divission head quarters Steven cole is here he is well as usual I see harateo smith the other day a part of my compney has gone 150 miles beyond petersburge they have seen some prety tuf times Col Washburn capt hodges are wounded capt hodges is dead capt John D B goddard of Worcester is dead. I think this war is about played out. I wished you could see the city of richmond and brest workes and big guns. there are three / lines of brest worckes the way they are made they did a great dich in the first place then they cut down trees and out of the limbs trim them picked and lay them along clost to the dich about 4 feet high then they took long rails and borded holes through it. then put sticks through it . it made me think of these revolving horse rakes onely I could turn it over and it would be up all the time. there are big guns pointing down the road it is for half a mile I am campt on the west side of the city I can go in to the city any day they dont ask any thing milk is onely 25ct a quart biscut 50 cts a doz eggs 80 cents. last sunday was White Sunday here the trees are all leved out and in blossom I want you to send me some postage stamps and / some money I want to get my watch fixed I suppose you got that money that frank sent you I let him have 50 dolars and let steven cole have 10 he did not get payed of when i did I kept 4 dolars but that soon went of I do not think of any thing els to write onely they have got the cars to runing here good by
