Deare Uncle & Ant
Sir yours of April was received in due time and contence duly noticed. was proud to hear from and to hear that you was well their is nothing new to write. we had a heard at Suffolk, we lay in our ditches for three weeks under the enemy shell and heavy skirmishing evry day. on the third of May we had a very heard skirmish as usual. Company B. was in front nine O clock AM untill 4 PM. we had three Companys from the (15) the Yankees charged our line several times and were repulsed by our boys they brought ought out a brigade which compelled us to fall back I lost three men killed and to wounded. the first Lt. of my Comy was wounded, which left me in command. he was hit before we established the line. he was a galant / little felow, and brave a man as their is in service. Uncle George I would have writen before now we were on the march to this place when I received yours and did not have the chance until now. we have been here at this place seven days and all wright in front. I regret very much the loss of Stone-Wall Jackson I think him to be second Washington we soldiers no how to appreciate such a General. as [?] all military duty is suspended to morow and all are requested to meet in fervent prare by order of General R E Lee. uncle George as my paper is scarce I will close give my love to Ant and all the family. And receive a double for yourself. nothing more excuse this short and badly writen letter I remain as ever your friend and relitive untill Death
