Mr John English
Egypt Miss.
Dear Sir In the absence of any direct means of communicating with Mrs Gregg—and feeling it incumbent upon me as the intimate friend of the General, and the sole surviving member of his former "military family", who remained with him to the end, & was near him when he fell—to furnish, for the satisfaction of his widow, a statement of the particulars of his death—& desirous, too, of adding an expression of my own heart-felt sympathy in her great affliction—I did not know to whose care I could more appropriately address my letter than to yours—the life-time friend of the family. Please forward, therefore, the enclosed to Mrs Gregg, or communicate the contents to her in such way as you may deem most advisable. Show it also, if you please, to Winston Garth, to whom I would write directly, if I felt at all sure that my letter would find him at home. Immediately after the General's funeral, Judge Reagan / the Post Master General, an intimate friend of Gen. Gregg in Texas & his colleague in Congress, wrote to Mrs Gregg, under cover to Dr Frank Sykes. I have also written to a Mrs Eve, a cousin of the General, living in Georgia, who wrote to know the particulars of his death—and said that she had frequent opportunities of communicating with Mrs. Gregg, at her father's, Gen. Garth's in North Alabama, where I understand she now is—outside of our lines. The General's personal effects sword, watch &c have been left for the present in custody of Judge Reagan. "Matt" the Genl's servant is with me, awaiting the order of his mistress, deeming it impolitic just now to send him home to North Alabama. There are also some unsettled claims of the Genl's [?] Govt for arrearage of pay & a horse killed in battle on Sept 29th which require attention. I should be glad to hear from you or Mr Garth upon the subject—or as I may be elsewhere, it would be better perhaps to write directly to Hon. J. H. Reagan, Richmond, Va Please present my kindest remembrance to Mrs English & to Winston Garth, & believe me
truly yr friend & servt
