Joseph E. Johnston to Samuel B. Maxey, 22 October 1883
Washington Octr 22d 1883

My dear General,
Col: John W. Glenn, who is a Texan and was a valuable officer of the Army of Tennessee as engineer, is an applicant for the office of Supervising Architects &c formerly occupied by Mr Hill.

He was thoroughly educated in his profession, and has had much experience, in which he established a high character wherever he has been employed. I know him well and am confident of his competence for the office named, and beg you for such recommendation of him as you can give on the testimony of another.

Yours very truly
J. E. Johnston

He is now Supt of Construction in New Orleans
