I wish you all a happy new year
 
Dear Brother I got your letter some time a go and ment to answed it before but hav been so buyszy fixing our winter quarters I havent had time till now I was glad to hear you was well and all the rest of the folks and little Bailey I was glad to hear he was tough and ruged I should like to see him very much I expect he has forgoten me by this time and how does Joe like geting up in the night and fus with that little girl of his I expect it makes him offle cross I am glad I hant their 
 
wal Darl how do you stand the cold weather I expect it takes hold of you dont it this is the best winter I ever experenced. Darl when I get home if this davlish war is ended we will come out here and stop one night wont we I should like to clear up a peace of land out here and plant it to potatoes I think they would do first trate. this Regt is doing picket duty they have been drawn up in line of battle two or three times but hant had eny fiting yet and I dont think they will for we have got to moove back to Camp Curward and this Regt and the 25 has got to guard Washington the rest of our time the Boys want to have one brush dredfuly and I wish they could 
 
I see by the papers Paul and Moat has got up a notch I hope it is so. it would be a good thing on the Chadbourn side if they have.
 
you tell Mellie I got her leter and will answer it as soo as I get time for I have got 8 to answer now but I want you to keep on writing and let me hear from home as often as you can and I will write as often as I can I should like to be down to Mr Clarks a few hours this eavning and have the pleasure of seeing that sweet Damzel and have ing one sweet smack from her rozy lips you must not say eney thing to Mother a bout this for she wont like it.
 
you must excuse my mistakes and bad writeing / I hant got eny thing more to write this time all the folks you was a quanted with ar well and ruged and I am tough as a pitch knot
