S. R. Phillips to Godfrey Weitzel, 6 May 1865
Springfield Mass.
May 6. 1865
Maj. Genl Godfrey Weitzel,
City Point Va
Dear sir:—
I send you herewith a copy of a note which I addressed to the "Daily Union", here which I trust will be acceptable to you. Had I been personally more conversant with the matters therein mentioned I might have written more at length and more satisfactorily to you—please accept the will for the deed.
I was exceedingly sorry not to have seen you when I visited my brother at your Headquarters near Richmond a few weeks since, for both of them have spoken so highly of you to me, and your reputation as an officer is such that it would have been very gratifying to me to have met you.
I trust that you and Mrs. Weitzel will visit Massachusetts at no distant day, and myself and wife will be very happy to see you at our house.
Resp'y & fraternally Yours
S. R. Phillips
