John H. Knight to Richard H. Watkins, 28 January 1864
Pr[?] Jan 28 1864
Dear Dick
On my way home I made application to the Sec of War through Mr Dickinson to be allowed to recruit for the Company to the number of 25 or 30. I stated in the letter that we had upon our Rolls 72 men, but of that number some were disabled & unfit for field duty and a good many others would have to be transfered to Infantry & artillery on acct of inability to mount themselves & some were now applying for transfers, & I desired to be allowed to recruit to such / an extent, as to leave the Company at the maximum [?] granting transfers to those who could not mount themselves. Mr Dickinson replied that the Sec said there would be no objection to our recruiting as proposed Since that time Genl orders No. 7 have been issued, which upsets all of my work. I want you to come over & let us send to Comdr of Conscripts a copy of our Roll & make a / Spl application to the Sec of War to be allowed to receive some recruits & I think we shall be successful. I have the Rolls or can get them in an hour. There are a good many good men desirous to join us, if we can arrange it so as to take them in. If you can not come, communicate with me & if you desire it I will forwd the Rolls to Col Sh[?]. I shall try & come over during this beautiful weather with my wife if I possibly can. / I have been foraging on kind friends & eating & living so high. I can get about with difficulty. If you come here this week to see the Collector come over if possible or write me—
Yours sincerely
Jno H Knight
