William R. Carter to Richard H. Watkins, 3 February 1864
Nottoway Feb'y 3rd 1864
Dear Capt:
At East Charlotte Court, I saw a man named East (W.Y. East) a blacksmith, who told me it will be is probable that he will have to go to the army & if so he wishes to get a position as blacksmith. He said he would be very glad to get into our Regt that he may be detailed for that purpose; he is said to be a very good man & reliable. Suppose you make an effort to get him enlisted in your company for its use or for that of your squadron. Also John A Stokes told me that a man named Cowiles near N[?] river was a conscript & a good smith. please see into that. You know the difficulties we have laboured under heretofore in this respect & we will have to help out the A.G.M. We have a firm prospect of having a very / full & efficient Regt. when we are called out. I hope you are enlisting all the good men you can get to 125. I think they can be enlisted & throw the burden on the govt of taking them away. If you have more applications than you can take please direct them to Co. "E" or Co. "B". I think it likely the former will be able to fill itself tho' I have not seen Lt Jones since I came to the County. I have been living on buttermilk & sleeping since I have been in the County. I have just recd an invitation to a public dinner given to Co "G" by the County of Cumberland on the 16th inst. I saw some of Co K at the depot, ([?]) yesterday. they say you are turkey hunting & staying at home. Cant you come down to see us? At any rate I shall come to see you before long.
Very truly yr frd &c
W. R. Carter
