William R. Carter to Richard H. Watkins, 8 February 1864
Nottoway near Junction Feb'y 8th 1864

Dear Capt:
Last night I recd the following telegram from Maj Gen Fitz Lee at Richd: "Order the companies of your command to concentrate at Altee's Station, Hanover County at once." This telegram reached the Junction last night at 40 minutes past 9. You will therefore collect your company as quickly as possible & move to Altee's Depot on the Central R.R. at once You had better move along the line of the R & D R.R. where you can get forage at the depots. Order your men to take 3 or 4 days rations with them cooked, enough to last them to Altee's & one day afterwards. Turn out every man you can & as well mounted as possible. Make them take every long range gun you can / find in your county that can be got. I would like for your company & the 2 Halifax & Nottoway & Mecklenburg & Cumberland to concentrate at Burkeville. Write or send me word the soonest possible day you can report at the Junction.
