William Chase to Friends, 26 October 1861
Camp Welsh, Oct 26/61

Dear friends, Again I will write a few lines to you. we are all well at present, except five or six, that are a little under the weather. some are home sick and some are a little sick. we all got a very bad cold the first night we were here, but it is very nice and warm now for it made us sweat this morning when we were out on drill. I write this to give you the directions. since I wrote to you I have found out that the other directions were not right, for one of our men was out to / the city yesterday and he inquired for the 45th regiment, and they told him that there was five I regiments the 45th, and so we will have to direct to Washington, DC, care of Col Welsh, Company I, 45th regiment, PV. we can hear the cannon roar all the time. there was a battery of six guns went by here toward the river this morning, to practice. Again I have left a letter over night, for as we were out on drill yesterday the Colonel came along and told us to pack up our duds for a march,
