Sabbath Eve
Acquia Creek, Va Aug 24th 1862
Dear Sister,
Yours of the 17th I rec'd to day and thought that I would begin to write an answer to night and finish in the morning. I cant write much to night for it is most time for roll call now. I suppose that you have heard about the fighting that has been going on out not far from here, but I cant tell you anything about it now. / Generals McClellan and Burnside passed through here to day towards the fighting country. I have wrote a letter to Jane to day. she wrote me a letter of half a sheet. she said that Will fletcher was going to war. well, there comes the drum, for roll call. so good night.
Monday morning 25th
Well, it is pretty warm this morning, and going to be a hot day. General McClellan and Burnside were here yesterday I did not see them. I have seen them both before and many others. / I had to stop just now and write an order on the sutler for one of the boys. I will send you a sample. I have wrote over a hundred dollars worth of such orders and after pay day the boys pay up. I do not have to use any such money, for I generally keep money enough to last me from one pay day to another. the country women bring in milk and eggs, and butter. milk, five cents a pint, eggs 25 cents a dozen, and butter, 25 cents a pound, but I dont buy much such stuff. I eat Uncle Sams rations.
well, I shall have to close for dinner is ready and I want to write to aunt betsey. please write soon, direct as before. from your brother, Wm Chase.
