Joseph W. Richardson
Joseph W. Richardson was born on November 30, 1833, in New Hampshire to Reuben and Mary Richardson. His father was a mechanic who owned $200 of personal property in 1860. The family moved to Lowell, Massachusetts, in the 1830s, but they settled in Manchester, New Hampshire, in the 1840s. By 1850, Richardson was working as a printer in Manchester.
 
He married Sarah E. Follansbee in Manchester on December 31, 1856, and the couple apparently had no children. He enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and mustered in as a private in Company H of the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry. The regiment took part in the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Fair Oaks, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Battle of Cold Harbor.
 
He was eventually promoted to sergeant, and he mustered out on June 21, 1864. He mustered out on June 21, 1864. Richardson settled in Boston, Massachusetts, and his right leg was amputated sometime after the war. By 1870, he was working in the Boston Journal office. He returned to Manchester sometime in the 1880s. He applied for a federal pension in July 1890 and eventually secured one. He died on March 30, 1895.
