Monday Sept the 29th 1862
 
this is all the time that I have in 4 days I have been out working on the forts to day I am on guard I just herd that the Regiment that Byron is in went up James River I have not been out on Picket yet one of our men had a ball shot through his left fore finger while he was on picket We expect to be atacked evry day there is to be 12 men taken out of our Regiment to man Howards Batery the fences are all burnt for wood and the cattle barn filld one of the forts is built in a large corn field 
 
I saw Wiley Wells Friday he belongs to the 130 N.Y. Regiment /
                       
Allen eat four good apples for me I wat to tel you how the folks look here the men drive oxen in carts with lines and bits in their mouth
