Suffolk Va Apr 25th
Dear Mother
I have just received your letter datted the 19th to night and was glad to hear from home but sory to hear that Pa was sick.
I am well at present and all the rest of the Boys.
I just received my box this morning.
the things were all right but the apples they were about spoiled. the one that allen sent was the best one of the holl.
the Boys here are all in good spirets at present
Yesterday quite a number of regiment went out on a scout they went out on the Eadington Road and drove the Rebs about two miles
I dont know what our loss was yet one Colonel had his hand shot off.
We have it a little harder since they came here but who cares our regiment are is in Fort union and the rest of the troops are in forts and behind the breast works
we have got a great manny men here and / and good manny siege guns and about twenty Batterys of field pieces. and 9 or 10 gun boats on the nansamond River.
I dont know what the rebs calculate to do but if they take this place there will be some hard fighting before they get it
when I enlisted I did not expect that I would ever have to stand on Picket in cite of the Rebs but we are within 80 roods of one annother so that we can / talk to one annother the Rebs do not fire on our Pickets only with artilery that is all the way they can drive our Pickets in.
it is very cold here now for this time of the year.
it is almost 8 months since I enlisted and it dont seem but a short time. it will soon be a year and after one year is gone it will seem a good while taken of from our time.
I sent 25 dollars in money and a check of 30 dollars. I sent it by express
Good By for the
Present write soon Will
