Washington May 8th 1862
 
Dear Sister
                        I take the opportunity of writing these few lines to you hopeing to find you and your husband and family in good health as this leaves me in at present thank god for it I arrived here safe but our Regiment is gone away and our Companey and a nother one is here yet we will go as soon as the next two Company comes to relieve us that will be next week some time they are going to try what we are made of we are bound to get into some scrape before we get home I was sorry i did not see Ferdinand before i come away John was wanting to come to / the ferry with me and I would not let him i told him to go to his work it would not do me nor him any good and he went of with the tears in his eyes i am going to write to John Morrison now after i write this one i dont know of much more to write the next time i write i will let you hear more i send my best respects to you and Ferdinand and family
