Camp near James River July 6th 1862
Dear Sister
I received your letter of the 23rd of June which gives me pleasure to hear that you and ferdinand and the children are all well as i am at present thank god for it
I did not know what war was until the last Battle it was one of the greatest Battles was fought between the north and South but the Rebels was to strong for us they had nearly ten to one of us we are expecting another great Battle shortly
tell John he may be well satisfied to stay at home and not come out here to leave his wife a widdow if he escaped as narrow as me he would not wish to come out here i had two horses shot under me there was several horses shot in our companey and no person inured their is one man missing their is about forty men killed in our Regiment, thank god i am alive yet but i dont know how long i got a letter from Pensylvania and the report there is that the world is near at an end i had to laugh when i read the letter the people about there is getting very good now they attend Chruch more regular since that report
[line obscured] it we ought to get paid again next week let me know what sort of a day was in Brooklyn on the 4th of July we had a funny day out here our companey went out scouting and happened to fall in with som of the Rebels Pickets and we were near bringing on a general engagement they follow in to our lines and they were met there with a terrible volley of cannon which thined them purty well all that got out safe they ran like deers and left their killed and wounded on the field for us to attend to over /
Bedelia if you have not much to write please send me a news paper instead of a letter we have got to pay fifteen cents for papers out here when they come here for it is very seldom they do come
I have not much more to tell you at present it is eleven Oclock and i must take a nap for it is very seldom we do get sleep we often have to lay down in front of our horses and hold the reins in our hands to be ready at a minutes warning
