Camp near Jefferson Va Aug the 10th 1863
 
Dear Brother & Sister
                                    I take my pen in hand to write these few lines to yous hoping they will find yous in good health as it leaves me in at present I thought yous were all dead when you did not write this is the third letter i wrote and got no answer yet i am living and well after the Maryland Campaign but i did not happen to be in it my horse gave out after the Battle of Aldie and i had to go to Washington for a fresh horse therefore i missed the fight and perhaps it was all for luck
 
I was after getting paid at potomac creek Station and i made up my mind to send $50 to you for safe keeping but when i got to Washington i took sick there and was there six weeks and i thought the money would come usefull and so it did and only for it i would be in the low lands before this time Ferdinand please let me know how is the draft getting along in Brooklyn and do you think you will be in the n[torn off] 
 
I have not much more to say at present I will enclose two dollars in this i expect to get paid tomorrow or next day give my love to cousin Mary & Jane & to Eliza, Emma, Mary & Katey and to all inquiring friends
