Camp near Potomac Creek Station
March the 1st 1863
 
Dear Sister
                        I take my pen in hand to write these few lines to you hoping to find you and Ferdinand and family in good health as this leaves me in at present
I received your kind letter on the 24th of february and i am glad to hear yous are all well i am now back with my companey and i will soon know every part in virginia I was not here three days until i was sent on picket and had a fight with the rebs they came and drove our pickets in and had a brisk skirmish when we drove them back across the river again we captured some of their men and the captured some of ours they had five or six killed we had two 
 
we have rain and snow here plenty and worse than all mud 4 foot deep some places the horses gets fast and cant get out i was on picket for the last five days and it either rained or snowed the whole time
 
I received all the letters that was sent to me when i was at Harrisons Landing and i received one that Emmy wrote since i came back the Captain kept them for me the boys told me the box came to the companey after i left but the cakes and every thing was spoiled but the brandy they said there was not enough of that or they would spoyl it to
 
I was mustered for pay here yesterday for six months pay but i dont know when i will get it I didnt receive that paper you sent along with the letter / I expect it is in the Distributing Camp yet i wrote to a fellow there and told him to forward my letters to me so I guess he got the paper and kept it we have to pay ten cents for a paper here and then it is one or two days late please send the Frank Leslie if you can get it handy if not dont mind it there is no such a thing as getting stamps out here we cant get them for money I happened to bring one or two along with me when i came
 
when you write let me know how is John making out and has he got a horse yet also let me know how is Mary and family and Jane
