William H. Corbin to Elijah A. Corbin, 15 August 1862
August 15th/62
Dear Father
with pleasure I write you a few lines to inform you that I am well and hope you are all the same. we are getting along fine. all seem to be sattisfied. I am perfectly well satisfied. Soldiers are all alike every one seems to be the other's friend. we have plenty to eat and drink.
we have 3 Rebels in the Guard House. One declars himself to be Jeff Davis's / spy. their trial comes off to day, and what will be dun with them I can not tell I would hang them if I had the sentance to pass on them. well have all the fun you can think off we sing we dance we play marble, and they play cards. Old Gaberal Smith give us a serenade yesterday wich was very fine. we have 2 cooks hired to go with us the bill will be $6.00 per year for each one of us I think this is very cheap
I sent my cloths by A. M. Kennedy. when you write let me know if you received them, but I suppose you did. John and Frank Clifton have come up to join our Company I think they will stay, for we want a few more good men, some being turned off on account of their age and some could not pass examination I have passed one but as to wheather I will pass the other or not I dont know I will badly disappointed if I dont / well I will have to close by asking you to write soon. you must come up and see us before we leave for I am not shure how soon we will leave. It will do anybody good to see 1500 men in camp their tents all struck fires burning and niggers cooking. you must write soon or come up I am going to try to get a furlough before we go away from here so good
