"Grandmothers Birth day," George H. Patch Poem, 31 March 1871
Grandmothers Birth day
                                    March 31st 1871

We sing not now of poets art,
Nor melodies of stranger lands.
But we would turn with thankful hearts
To her who held our youthful hands.

Though fourscore years have passed away
She is a source of comfort still.
She with her cap so white cap and hair of gray
Still helps and guides our youthful will.

Her children all to age have come,
Three boys two girls have homes secure.
Beside two girls and children 3 in heavens home,
She'll go to them one day tis sure.

But still the family's not complete
Grand-children 6 are counted in.
And a great grand-childs tiny feet
Complete four generations kin. /

O mother blest by heaven indeed,
Thy toiling years were not in vain.
And as the s[?] cast his seed
And reaped a rich reward again,

So tis with thee the lessons taught
To these thy children in there youth,
Are with Gods richest blessings fraight
So full of mercy love and truth.

Thy sons revere thee Dorcas Brown,
Thy daughters have their fathers pride.
And as he won a fair renown,
Thou didst but share it as his bride.

Grandmother thou art growing old,
And, as for sight thou hast a lack;
grandson now like Christ of old,
Will strive to help thee get it back.

So take these glasses Grandma dear,
I only hope that you will live,
To wear them here for many a year;
And trust they will much comfort give.

They come from one whose earnest wish,
Is that his life may always be,
A scene of happiness like this.
So grandmother could always see

And now dear friends my muse is done,
O may we never lose our sight;
Until our earthly race is run,
And we shall say our last good night.

            From your loving Grandson
