Jackson Miss July the 19 1863
           
Dear Mary                                                                              
I can wright you a few lines to with good courage we have taken Jackson and have onley one man cild in our rigermant and 10 wounded we were the first that went in the town thair was know one hurt in our Compney the rebs left the town last knight so we had no grate troble in taking it and it was lucky for ous but they wer afraid of ous so they left we took quite a lot of prisners and they say they have fought as long as they want to we was not quite smart enough to catch old Jonston if we could of got him i should of liked it but he was a litle to cuning for ous it is a forsaken looking place houses air burnt and thousands of dolars worth of firnature laying in the streats complety distroyed it looks / a litle to bad but it is yousing them just wright but i hope this thing is about don with Capen Pingey is sick and in the hospital so he was not with us he is beter than he was and in hopes he will soon be with ous for he and i and dick air all the ones that air left of the Lisbon boys and i feal lonsom when he is absent for we have very good unstanding i am in hopes know that we shal go back to kentuckey but i dount know as we shal my helth is tolerable good but i am amost worn out for the last too weaks we have had had the hardes time we have had sence we caim out we have not slept more than 4 ours out of twenty fore we have ben marching and schermishing most of the time but i think we shal clean them all / out after awhile Elro is well and all the cousens and they send thair to you Jim Bayley is well with the exception of having a cold i cant wright any more this time for we air orderd to get redy to march and i will try and wright when we stop whair i can
 
I want you should wright a litle oftner if you can for that is the soldier best gift to hear from home excuse me for this time i do not no as you can read this but i guess you can so i will close
 
            Ciss the boys for me tell them father wants them to be good boys
