Varina H. Davis to Unknown, 2 September 1898
My dear Judge,
Thank you for your kind letter. My poor child was persuaded by me to go down to Atlanta to the reunion. She rode in a procession there and was first made very warm by the hot sun and then a summer rain came up and drenched her utterly. She came home with acute gastritis and has lain now for over a month unable to retain anything on her / stomach and wasting away with the agonies of nausea. Our Doctor says she will recover after a tedious and wearing convalescence and so I am watching with her through it. I am glad you have left the heat of Texas, you needed a change. We can not spare men like you there are so few left. I am grieved to know dear Gov Lubbock is not as strong as we could wish him to be. Ten years ago / he told me his age but I have forgotten it. Do give him dear love if you write to him and with kindest regards to Mrs Reagan
Believe me always affectionately
Your friend,
V. Jefferson Davis
