My Dear Wife
Since writing my last there has been an addition to our numbers. the Officers & crews of the U.S.S. Clifton & Sachem together with some soldiers from the 75th & 160th New York Volts making in all here now not far from 400. I am in hopes now that the "powers that be" will think of us and have us exchanged soon. I know of no reason why we are kept here and can hear of none. If you do not hear certain of our exchange by the time you receive this write to me directed as you will find below and also speak to R J Kimball & C. M. Middleton inquire of them if they know why the exchange has not been affected. ask them to write If the Department is dissatisfied with my conduct on the 21st of Jany/63 they should get me where they can investigate my conduct and actions. I was not aware the ship was to be surrendered until after the colors were down some time. I felt then and do feel now as bad as any one can and would like to be where I could justify myself the government is loosing my services all the while I am here and it is unjust to keep us here so long if it can be avoided.

I am quite healthy now. all I want is more exercise in good pure sea air the health of the camp is better & is still improving. I would rather be home with you & the children but must remain contented here I suppose

when you write put nothing in except such as you expect others to read as all letters passing between the two sections of the country are all read

write to Father tell him I am well & although a prisoner I am as purely true to my country & her navy as I ever was

Kiss the little ones for me

Yours &c
