Dear father I take the opportunity of droping you a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope these few lines will find you all well
We were received with respect by the [faded] all the way from home to w[?] place we met with a fine dinner at Jonesborough and supper and breakfast in Fayetteville we went on the cars from Jonesborough to fayetteville and then went on the steamboat to [faded] and then we got on the rail road and went to weldon about 164 miles the rout we traveled is about 310 mils from carthage all the way cittizens thronged the road with cheers and shouts and waveing ther hats and handkerchiefs in the air as the cars went by flying as fast as a bird. the ladies would come running out and throw flowers and cedar boughs to us to show their respect for the company /
Companys are pass this place ever day there was five or six companies passed us yesterday while we were at weldon waiting for the car trains are passing dily crowded with volunteers to verginia
the greatest battle that has accurd since the battle of watterloo was last sunday at Manasses gap in which their was about one hundred and twenty thousand engaged the fight continued 10 hours the confederates killed about 10,000 of the yankes with a loss of 1,200 and captureing some 30 pieces of artillery and about 1,200 prisoners of the enemy great victory on our side the yankes were totaly whiped and routed and were persued by our cavalry for several miles when stoped at last and returned to camp I have not time write much at this time I cannot tell how long we will stay here so answer this as soon as you can
