Noah Deaton to Sarah B. Deaton, 28 July 1861
Garysburg N.C. July 28th 1861

I again take the pleasure of droping you a few lines to let you know that I am well and have been well ever since I left home and I hope this may find you all well. the company is well with exception of two or three I was deceived in the fare for it is good enough we have corn meal and flour & rice & bacon & fish & sugar coffee & molasses and other things plenty we pitched our tents in a nice grove wher we can make our selves comfertable and the boys all seem in fine spirrit about five hundred troops left here to day it is thought that about 30,000 troops will pass here this week about 1000 passed yesterday but we are likely to remain here for some time yet the montgomery company is here I saw J. P. Leach & E. Owens to day there was preaching at our camp to day and apointed agan next sunday and one good thing I can say the company has all been sober ever since we come here because they cant get liquor here and in fact the camp seems as much like a camp meeting and more than like a camp of warriors

the great victory at menases has revived the people all about here It cannot be ascertained how many of the enemy was engaged but they confess their loss to be 20,000 of which over 10,000 wer killed and the rest missing and our loss is not moore than five or six hundred our armies are surely protected by a devine providence so far and I hope the north will soon see their folly and let us a lone I am about 360 miles from here home

If providence will permit hope the war will soon be over and we will all be sent home If I no more see you here I hope we will meet in heaven where parting is no more

No more at present only I remain true to you all please answer this as soon as you can
