Miss Sarah J McDonald
Madam
We the Moore County Indipendents arived at Garysburg on Monday after we lef carthage we pitched our tents in a pleasent grove on the west side of the rail road and we remained their untill Tuesday the 30th ult. when we by order of Col W. J. Clark and adjutant of that post we moved our tents to weldon and were placed in an open field where we are exposed openly to the sun shine and I am sorry to say that it's verry sickly place the companys here has sufferd a greatdeal with the fever and measels ours is the healthiest company in camp about here we are in camp wit the 14th Regiment but we do not belong to any regiment yet we will stay here a while but I cannot tell how long we have got to guard the rail road bridge across the Hronoke River
We hear from the seat of war every day there is no important movement since the great Battle at Mannassas the nuse came here to day tha lincon wants for him and his cabinet to study about the war question the term of 60 days but Jeff Davis we learn has granted him only 20 days it is rumord that Lincon begins to want to make peace Whether it be so or not we fear it is only to reorganize his armies The Loncolnites met with such a perfect defeat at Mannassas that we allow they would need some time to think before they undertake to give us another trial I have seen some of the men that was in the battle the state that it is the terrblest scene of horror that can be immagined may God grant that I may never behold such a scene of slaughter the camp seems to almost demoralized it is a place that tries morality in almost every form it almost a continual hum of profane language
O may we be remembered by all the praying christians please remember me and all rest of our company at your prayer meetings nothing more at present
please answer this that I may hear from you all
Yours respectfuly
Noah Deaton
