Well Sarah I seat my self to answer your letter that came to hand yesterday It gives me satisfaction to hear from you and all the rest. I am well and hope this may reach and find you and all enjoying the same blessing
I received the bundle of clothes you sent to me and the letter that com with it and wrote to you in a day or two afterwards I was glad to get them though I was not in need of them at the time you need not send any more to me this winter unless I send for some thing for I think I have near about enough of clothing to do me this winter
I am glad to hear that you have all gatherd a fine crop this fall and that Father was geting along tolerable well a sowing small grain (sow all you can) you said you wished me to come home and help you eat some of your rice but I tell you that we have rice here almost every day until I am tired eating it. I woud be glad to get the chance to go home but I don't much expect to get an opportunity this winter. our fare is tolerable good for the last two or three weeks we have had take rye coffee but we have sugar to sweeten it and the most of us likes it tolerable well / we can git thousands of sweet potatoes at from .40 to .50 cents per bu. &c
I shall not say much about the wreck this time as I have writen to you about it before. we serevd their one week and then relieved by other 2 companys. two days after we left a larg ship came near and fired many bomb shells at our men their our boys took shelter behind the sand banks and let the vandals shoot til they got tired of the fun some shells fell near our men but done no harm only one fell about the cookery and broke one plate and scaterd sand among the dishes we had no larg guns at the wreck or we could have sunk their ship.
we will move in a day or so a cross the sound out on the main land where I expect we will take up our winter quarters. The blocking vessels are about here as usual on the night of the 22 inst 6 negros runaway from Beaufort the got on a small boat and it is thought they went out and got a board of a yankee vessel that was anchord out some 4 miles from shore. nothing more at present only I send my best wishes to every one of you
