Miss Sarah B. D—
Dear Sister
This morning affords me an opportunity of acknowledging the recep of your kind and welcom letter wich afforded me much pleasur to hear that you were all well. I am enjoying as good health as I could wish for and I trust this may find you all enjoying the same desirable blessing of this life. the health of the company is only tolerable but some better than it has been for the last few weeks
I have no news of importance to communicate and hope this will be none the less appreciated for that cause. we hear nothing but war. this is a very sickly place here and we are prepareing / to move about 8 or 10 miles up the rail road near Mosley Hall where it is said there is very good watter. the watter is not good at this camp our Regt. is out on picket only our company and one one other all the troops has been gon from here to Richmond Va only the 26th 35th 25th and 17th Regiments and it probably that we will soon be sent to some other place there will must be a force kept here to keep the invaders from over runing this part of the state and plundering and stealing every thing they can find. the condition of our country looks very gloomy at present but we must trust an almighty power for safety and do our duty as best we know how our men are in a fine spirit /
I hear Capt. Martin's funeral preached yesterday in the court house in Kinston the most of Capt. J. M. Kellys men was there. cousin A. E. McDonald was there and come to our camp with me he is well. Cpt Wm M. Blacks company is in Pettersburg Va. and I think all the Moore County companies are in Virginia only capt. C. C. Dowds, Capt J. M. Kellys and Capt. Bryans Cavilry all of which are at this place.
the weather has ben very warm with a great deal of rain except since yesterday the weather is cool you will recollect this day 12 monts ago (June 9th) I was at home and Mr. Wm Whitlock was there with me but instead of being at home to day finds me in the tented field amid the friends of our country surrounded / with implements of war. many of our friends has gon to eternity since we left home. Mr. Wm Whitlock was take prisoner at newbern and was carried north he wrote home some time ago. I must come to a close pleas write soon let me know whether the clothing you sent me after the battle got back home or not being that I had as much clothes as I could pack in my knapsack I sent the bundle back
Your Sincere Brother
