William Deaton Dear father I have the pleasure of an opportunity of droping you a few words which will inform you that I am well I have been in the hospital for the last 3 weeks and have recoverd and reached camp last night and feel tolerable well only I am not quite as strong as when fully in health. there is much sickness in our camp at present. Wm McKinnon is in the hospital but he is on the mend. I hope this may reach and find you all enjoying a reasonable portion of health I receive Sarahs letter this morning of the 27th ult. being the first and only letter that I have recd since I left N.C. it give me much pleasure though it has been almost a month since it was wrote I wish I could hear from home oftener.
 
I lef the city of Richmond yesterday at 6 P.M. and came down on a gun boat near this place there is many sick and wounded in and about the city and many dying. our men are actively at work preparing to receive the invaders at every point. the God of heaven has blessed and crowned our armie with victory in the last and great battles before Richmond we should all thank and prais his name for his many favours upon us and earnestly implore that he will continue to bless us untill the invaders are all dispersed and driven from our land and that our people will continue to revere his name. our camp is near to Drurys Bluff Proctor station Va. I want you to write soon direct to Drurys Bluff Proctors Station Va. Ransoms Brigade Co H 26 N.C.Regt. I supose you recd. the $50.00 from Mr D. McKinnon I must close as my space is filled out. I send my best wishes to you all

as reguards the movements of between the two great armies in this region all seems quiet at present and both seems to be prepareing another great conflict /
 
July 24th as I failed to send my letter of yesterday and so I will only say that I am well today
