Much esteemed friend your letter of the 24th June failed to reach me untill a few days ago although it had been writen a long time it was read with much pleasure and highly appreciated
I have not been in good health since we came to Va untill the last 2 weeks / my health is tolerable good now and and I hope this may find you all in good health there has been much sickness amoung our men since the great battle before Richmond but I think since we moved from about Richmond that the health in our camp is improveing. we have had some tolerable tough times but are now on the road to City Point about 2 miles from Petersburg on the south side of the Appomattox River where we get plenty of very good / spring water which is one great advantage to us
Mr Martin A. McKinnon (of our company) departed this life on yesterday evening he died in the hospital at Petersburg his death is lamented by all who knew him
Our men were much delighted yesterday with the return to camp of our men that was captured at Newbern N.C. and Mr William Whitlock was among the number he is here now with us he says that he was / not treated well by the yankies and as his health is not good he will be apt to be sent home in a short time (in a week or two).
I would like very much to be in Moore county so that I could help eat watermelons peaches and aples &c I supose there is a great deal up there this season it is very plenty here but it sells at such high prices that one can't get much I have seen peaches sell at 15 cts per doz. and wattermellons at about $3.00 apiece /
As I filled out my small sheet I must conclude on this scrap of paper. if I could see you I could tell you something about the times that we have seen in the army and I hope the war will soon end so we can all go home I must close please write soon and give all the news you can spare. from your much esteemed Friend,
