Miss Sarah J.—

Dear friend
I seat myself to drop you a few lines in answer to your last which came by the hand of Mr J. A. McLeod he reached camp yesterday

I am in tolerable good health and hope this may find you and all the same. /

Our Colonel managed to get out of Ransoms Brigade or we would have been over about Manassas before this time

We are now 2 miles from the city of Petersburg and in Genl Pettigrew's Brigade I have no news to communicate that would be of much intrest only the news from old Stonewall Jackson and all the news from him reaches Moore county in / 2 or 3 days. we hear but very little from the last great battle only that [faded] has gained a signal victory and captured many $ thousands worth of commissary & Quartermaster Stores many prisoners and artillery It is rumored that Genl McClellan is killed but the report not with much foundation. I supose there some of the conscripts has taken to the brier patches to keep from coming out / and doing their duty and we hear that some of them had been [faded] and stealing [faded] wives of some of the poor soldiers that have gon from home to defend their country I tell you those villians that are lurking back there in the swamps will see skybugs some day I must close by asking you to write soon from your afectionate Friend
