Dear sister it is with much pleasure that I set my self to drop you a few lines in answer to yours that come to hand some week ago
I am enjoying tolerable good health at present and trust this may find you and all well
I have nothing of much importance to communicate at present this is a very cold wet day and the conscripts that have just come in to our company think it a tough time but I recon they will soon get used to camp it is true it is by no means like liveing at home but a good soldier will not murmur / at trifles when their country and everything that is dear to them is in such danger of being chrushed to ruin by the iron heels of a tyrant
when I last wrote to you we were about starting out on pickett and stayed out one week at City Point which place is on the James River at the mouth of the Appomattox River while there we could catch as many fish as we could eat. I would write oftener only we have to drill and work on breast works and do our own cooking and so we are kept busy most of our time the fortifications around Richmond and Petersburg are immence and of a in extent and and of a formidable character after the series of great battles which has been fought of late and in which the god of battle has been most greatful / unto our armies in crowning them with victory in almost every conflict for the last few days the tide of battle that has been rageing with such fury seems to be quiet it may be that it has stoped as it wer to get breath and we would not be surprised if it was to burst forth with all the fury of its dreaded consequences at any moment, but hope that bosom friend has not feled yet he seems to say peace, which we trust will soon come. we must implore god to aid us at all times and and all circumstances and finally when done with this life receive us in his kingdom for the redeemers sake amen
please write soon
your affectionate Brother
untill Death
