Dear Father
As we have again got back to our camp near Petersburg I take my pen to drop you a few lines which will inform you that my health is good and I hope this will find you all likewise
I have nothing of much importance to communicate to you at this time as nothing has occured since I last wrote to you
we got back here to our / camp day before Christmas and so we have been permited to spend Christmas in camp we have no duty to do since we came back only answer to our names at roll call. we enjoyed our Christmas tolerable well it was about as still a time as I have seen in camp and seemed more like Sunday than any day that I have seen in twelve months there is good news for our main army in Northern Va under command of Genls Lee, Jackson &c / they have again been successful in thrashing out the enemy and better still we are informed that a wonderful revival of religion has broke out all through that vast army and is still going on. may God grant that it may spread all through the armys of the Confederate States of America.
Neill Leach told me that William Nalls was at Goldsboro his thigh was broke in the Battle of Kinston and he fell in to the enemies hands and his leg was amputated but he seemed in good spirits / my object in writing this letter is to inform you that we have got back to our old camp near Petersburg Va nothing more at present only I remain your most affectionate Son untill Death
