Dear sister
We have just arived at this place 140 miles from Richmond west of the Blue Ridge the road run under ground 4 times the tunnel through the Blue Ridge is 7/8 of a mile and as dark as pitch our Regt is at winchester about 90 miles from this place it will take us 5 or 6 days to march to it as the train runs no farther than here thought I better drop you a few lines as I don't know what the chance will be to write after we leave here I was delayed 2 days in Fayetteville one in Wilmington.
my health is as good as when I lef home and some what better for I am well of the cold and cough that I had when I was at home. I got in company with the boys with Hollingsworth at Fayetteville N. McDonald at Richmond Va and the capt at Weldon N.C. / I have nothing more to write at this time we will have a long march now and it is uncertain where we will find the Regt. All the men who are going to there regiments are stoped here untill there are several hundred gathered together because the yankees cavilry are scouting between here and our Regt and a small squad of us would be in danger of being captured

nothing more may the hand of all wise providence protect us under all circumstances and save us in his kingdom for christ sake

I cannot tell you where to write to now your affectionate
Brother
Noah Deaton

I am anxious to hear from Brother John as soon as possible
