Flora Jane Currie was born on January 6, 1845, in North Carolina, to Angus Currie. Her father was a farmer who owned $1,400 of real estate and $2,800 of personal property by 1860. She grew up and attended school in Moore County, North Carolina. She married David E. Patterson on March 28, 1867, and they had at least eight children: John, born around 1868; George, born around 1871; Angus, born around 1873; Alexander, born around 1875; Cornelius, born around 1877; Mary, born around 1883; Daniel, born around 1884; and Duncan, born around 1888. They lived in Moore County, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1870, they owned $300 of real estate and $250 of personal property. She died on September 4, 1919.
