Samuel Keller, Jr., was born around 1855 in Indiana to Samuel J. Keller and Melvina Wolleat. His father was a brick maker who owned $1,200 of real estate and $200 of personal property in 1860. Keller grew up and attended school in Bluffton, Indiana. He left home around 1874, informing his mother that he had “got a Job…and I guess I will not com back.” He worked in a shop, and he promised his father that he would “finesh my traid.” He probably settled in San Joaquin County, California, and he died sometime after 1880.
