Oliver W. Shibley to Mary C. Shibley, 1 October 1862
October the 1 62
Dear Wife it is a dark rainy day & I havent much to do so I thought I would write a fiew lines to you. we were examined to day, and our company all passed except four, some of the other companies had 10 or 12 throwed out I think we will get our uniform the first of next week and then I think we will get our pay, and then I will come home that is if the regiment is formed and I get my position which I think will be no trouble it is most impossible for me to write for the noise, some are laughing others are dancing and more are talking
I want you should write as soon as you get this and and let me know what clothing you want / for I can get it cheaper here than you can thare & groceries are cheaper rite what you want I suppose you have heard that Herick is gone. he went away a week ago yesterday and we havent heard from him since some think he has left for parts unknown but I am afraid he is dead we have looked all over the city two or three times and can find nothing of him I dont no what will be done about it. now Mary I want you should write, if you knew how much I wanted to hear from home you would write oftener than you do I am well & may this find you the same. do the children say eny thing about me No more present, from you husband
