January the 26
I thought I would write a litle more this morning before sending my leter Gerard said that Henry spoke about me in his letter I am glad he has not forgoten me. we are building a bridge across a swamp to get around vixburg in order get communication from below. grants army is coming down the river to operate with ours. I think when they make another strike they will be a litle more careful / Jef Davis if they loose this place they loose all he wants every man come to his ade, for three month one month or as long as they can. this place is very strongly fortified & our generals know it so I think they will be careful
