Dear Mollie
I wrote you a letter the 7 & I have not received eny since the 28 of may. it seams like a long time not to have a letter. if you have writen every week it is strange that the mail is not more reguler. we may have a mail to night or to morrow at least I hope we ma. well mary, I havent much news to write this time. we have moved down the river about 1 half mile. we are about as near the rebs as we can get without diging into their entrenchments. I think they will halfto give up before long for their grup is geting short. they say we cant whip them but we can / starve them out. they are expecting reinforcements every day, but they cant get them. we have to meny forces in our rear watching them. they made a rade into youngs point last week but were repulsed. they also made a rade into Miligens bend. they were about 8000 strong. we had a niger brigade there, they had a big fight, the nigers fought like tigers. they fought them 2 to one & whiped them. the rebs raised a black flag & the darkys went in on their nerve. they showed them no quarters.
Sunday morning 14
mollie I will finish my letter this morning while it is cool. the mail is going out this morning. / that token you sent me is very nice, the childrens hair are very natural. some of the boys wanted to know if my wife made it. I told them she did. they say they dont see how I got so smart a woman I tell them they dont no me as she does. Mary, if you have not sent those pictures when you receive this, I think you had not beter send me yours & the childrens & keep the others for it is most imposible to keep them from geting soiled & a great meny are broken all to pieces. if I have but one to carry I think I can take care of it I would like to have the others but you had beter keep them now. /
