Oliver W. Shibley to Mary C. Shibley, 26 September 1863
Sept the 26, /63
Dear Mollie,
I wrote a short letter while we were at vixburg. as I had no chance to mail it I thought I would write some more. we embarked on the John J Row the 24 we are going up the river as fast as the old boat can run, we are going to Cairo. how much further I cant say. I would not be surprised if we went to reinforce old rosy in verginia, & we may garison some fort, but I think not for our whole division is going & I dont no but the 15 army core. all the sick are to be left at Memphis. this is very nice weather but rather cold nights. I will not finish my letter to day, for it will take three or four days longer to get to Cairo. I am well this morning & hope you are, good bye
[upside down margin]

Sunday the 27
we got to helena about 2 oclock last night & left about sunrise this morning. it is about 90 miles from helena to memfis, as near as I can find out we are going to reinforce rosen crance. we heard yesterday that he had a fight & the loss was thirty thousand on each side. he has been reinforced by herlbert & I think the fight will be all over before we get thare. I hope it may, for I have seen fighting enough, but if it must be done I wanto see it finished up this winter, unless it is, we will the war will last another year & perhaps longer. the 28 we are at memfis & about to take the cars. I think we are going to reinforce rosen crance so I have no time to write much. Landon is with us. I got your letter & the things you sent. I will again as soon as I can. I saw Dow to day he is not doing well. it is dark & I must stop O Shibly
