Oliver W. Shibley and Dow Shibley to Mary C. Shibley, 19 June 1864
No. 66.
June 19th /64
Dear Mollie
we are camped near lost mountain. we have been fighting the rebs here for more than a week. we got them in close quarters & last night they left. I think they will cross the river before they make another stand. if we whip them at that point (& we will) we are bound to have atlanta I think by the fourth of July. we have whiped them at every point so far. thare has been some very hard fighting on our right yesterday we turned their flank & last night they they left. our corps has taken about 150 prisoners & about the same number of diserters came in since we have been here.
I saw Dow yesterday & red a letter you wrote to him. I am sory you do not get my letters I think it is very strange. I have not had a letter from you since the 6 & we have had 4 or 5 mails since. I wrote to you the 7. I have not writen since for thare has been no chance for writing. Dow said he had writen to you & perhaps you will get his letter if you dont mine. I want you should keep up good courage for I think this war will close within a year. I hope we may live to enjoy our lives again when this war is over.
June 23. Kinnissaw mountain. well Mary we are fighting here yet. the enemy have fallen back to the mountain we have cut off their retreat. / our right is resting on the river, they say we have one corps here that cant get away. how true it is I cant say. we have taken some of their train for some of our army have had some of their rations I saw Dow yesterday he is well. I will send this letter with their mail & perhaps you will get it sooner than you would to send it with ours. well Mary Dow has just come & I will close. I have not had a letter since the 6. I think I will get one in a fiew days. my health is firstrate & I am glad that I can say it. what is life without good health. Vrooman is not well. I am afraid he will not stand this sumers campaign. Dow will write some in this. tell our mothers I would like to hear from them. no more this time
Mollie as Oliver was writing and myself being by I thought I would say in his letter what I said in the one I wrote to you, for I stated in my last to you, and I want you to tell Mother and have her have the boys do so for her that is the [faded] and send it to me and I will divide with Oliver. they can send it by mail and they must mark the package so that government can see what it is, and it will come to me the same as a letter. we have had hard fighting for more than week and it is reported we have a part of Johnsons army cut off from [faded] army & we will capture them about 20,000 of them so reported
Dow
