Dear Mollie
We left Savannah on the 13 & came here the same day. we are camped near town. our regiment is detailed to unload boats. it is the freight of our brigade. our division is camped about 4 miles from here. the 17th Corps is ahead of us. they had a fight the same day we came in here. they drove the rebs & I was told yesterday that they were crossing broad river about 12 miles from here. it is forty miles from here to Charlston & I think we will strike for that place as soon as the corps all gets here.
Well Mary I have not heard from you yet it seams as though I never would get eny more letters from you. I have not heard from you since Dec 17th [faded] you write & the mail is delayed on the road. I think we will get a mail in a day or two. I dont no as I have much news to write this time. we can hear the roar of artilery very plain they are fighting about 12 miles from here. well Mary I have been on the salt waters for the first time. it was a short but pleasent trip. we have all the oysters here we want we can get them for 20 cts a quart. I eat 2 quarts yesterday & could eat as many more to day / so you see my apetite is very good. I spoke in my last letter about having the rheumatism it is geting beter.
