Oliver W. Shibley to Mary C. Shibley, 19 April 1865
Raleigh, North N.A.

Dear Mollie,
we have the chance to send out mail at one oclock & I thought I would write a fiew lines. I wrote to you the 9 & received one from you the same day. it was writen the 26 of March. we had a mail last night but thare was nothing for me. we are in camp now waiting for Jonson to surender. Sherman gave him until yesterday 2 oclock to surrender, if not he would move on him at once & would annihilate him in 2 hours. it is suposed that he has come to terms or we would not lay here. he wanted to surrender the forces / under his imediate command & Sherman wanted all east of the Miss. I think he has come to terms or we would not be laying here. it is suposed that our fighting is all done & the Vollenteer army will be out of existence in 60 days. I hope to god it is so for I have seen war anough. Johnson is about 26 miles from here. Stoneman burned the bridge across the yadkin river which cut off his retreat & now he is completely surounded. Sharden & Stoneman in his front Old Billy & Hill in his rear & flank. I hope the rebellion is dead for ever & we can return to our homes once more whare thare is peace & hapiness. I think the soldier will know how to apresiate his home if he never did before.

I have not heard from Dow yet. I supose he is on the road some whare. some of the boys have been detained on the road on acount of transpertation & that may be the case with him. my health is very good, the boys are all well & in good spirits. Len is as fat as a hog he is writing home to day.

you spoke about it being cold. I dread the cold winters for we have not had but very litle cold weather whare we have been the last three winters.

I think I can keep your feet warm next winter & the rest of you too, if not I can trie.

            no more this time from
yours as ever, to Mollie C Shibly
