Washington D.C.
May 26th /65
I am to day with Oliver in his tent and we will both write to you all at home We are both well at this time & expect to be home in a short time, but how soon we cannot tell I understand we are to be mustered out of the survis here and go to our respective states to be paid. I hope we will be paid two months here. We have no money and it would be rather unpleasant and embarasing to pass through the country without any at all because there are many little things to eat we would like that we cannot get without money and foraging is plaid out upon our own people. We was received by the people of Washington on the day of the Grand Review / as no army ever was received by any people, and the impression the Army of the West made on the inhabitance here will ever remain lasting to them and there children yet unborn, if history does not neglect us and I think it will not. I will send you a paper that will give you the particulars of the Review, if I can get one
Mary you must let Mother see this letter. I am glad to know that the boys are at work but would like it better if they would work land somewhere I hope she has kept her horses and cattle and will do so untill I get home. nothing more now
Dow
I have been all through the Capitol the White house, was in the room where Lincoln laid in State, and &c. /
Mary I received a letter from you yesterday mailed the 8. I received two the 17 while we were laying at Richmond. this may be the last I will write to you for some time. I hope we will get our pay here for I would rather not go to Iowa at preasent. If I do I will come back, for I wanto see Mother as well as the rest of the folks. If you was in Iowa I would not go to Illinois until fall, but as it is I think I will not stay long in Davenport we are camped about 3 miles from the city. I think we will stay here about two weeks. I expect the time will seem long for we are all ready to go home. you spoke in one of your letters about making beding I think you had beter make all you can for you will want them.
well Mary I dont no as I have much more to write this time. I wanto go to town to morow to see the Capitol & the white house. I have seen so much that thare is no use for me to commence telling so I will not commence.
