John Douglass Corse was born around 1821 in Alexandria, Virginia, to John and Julia Corse. He married Lucy E. Smith on June 14, 1856, and they had at least four children: Mary, born around 1856; Lucy, born around 1860; Julia, born around 1870; and Belle, born around 1876. He worked as a banker in Alexandria, Virginia, and by 1860, he owned $20,000 of real estate and $30,000 of personal property. He probably lived in Canada for several years. By the 1890s, the family was living in Takoma Park, Maryland. His wife died on April 9, 1897. By 1900, he was living with his daughters and granddaughter in Takoma Park. He died there of cerebral apoplexy on July 23, 1902.
