Edwin M. Stanton to (?) Sanford, 29 March 1867
War Department
Washington City,
March 29 1867

My Dear Sir
Please again accept the sincere thanks of Mrs Stanton & myself for another token of your kindness received yesterday. The fruit was in excellent condition & very welcome. Mrs Stantons health I regret to say shows no sign of substantial improvement. Her cough and debility continues and I am very apprehensive of the effect of the cold March winds that now prevail here. The season has been very unpropitious. I trust that you and your own family are well. I have a gossiping letter in store for Miss Sanford whenever time and spirits will allow me to write to her. For a month I have been disabled by rheumatism in my right arm but am better. Yours ever
Edwin M Stanton
