January the 7th 1863
Dear beloved Companion it is with the gratest of pleasure that I enjoy the present oportunity to right you a fiew lines to inform you that I am well and I hope that these fiew lines may find you all enjoying the best of health I received your letter today and was very glad to hear from you but I was sory to hear that you had so much trouble / about me and I was sory to hear that sweet little Sarah had gon but I hope that Crid will take good care of her and I was sory to hear that Nancy Jane and the baby are not well but my loving wife I dont think that you have forgot me and I no that I have not forgot you for I have been homesick to get home to see my sweet wife and little children but if the good lord will spair my life a little longer / that I will bee permitted to return to my beloved family. We are still in Memphis Tennisse yet and I think that we will stay here this winter we herd that our armey has taken Vicks burg but we have not herd much of the perticklers about it yet the camp diaread is very bad here now there was one man out of our Company beried last sunday but he was sick before we lef Indianapolis we dont no when we will get our pay / but I dont think that we will get any for to or three months yet and I am out of money now but if I need it I can get an order Sutler and I can get paper and envelips but I cant get any stamps there so I can get along without any money so I mist quit so no more at present but remember your Dear Companion
