Peter Clinton was born around 1825 in Ohio to Abel and Eve Clinton. His father died around 1828, and his mother followed around 1841. He married Rachel Householder in Jefferson County, Ohio, on April 20, 1848, and they had at least four children: Valeria, born around 1849; Sylvinia, born around 1851; Caroline, born around 1854; and Henry, born around 1868. Clinton worked as a farmer in Saline, Ohio, and by 1850, he owned $2,200 of real estate.
A decade later, he owned $2,500 of real estate and $250 of personal property. He enlisted in the Union army on August 14, 1862, and mustered in as a corporal in Company I of the 52nd Ohio Infantry on August 22. The regiment took part in the Battle of Perryville and spent the winter of 1862-63 stationed in Nashville, Tennessee. He was discharged for disability there on February 14, 1863. He returned to Saline after leaving the army, and by 1870, he owned $1,800 of real estate and $300 of personal property. He applied for a federal pension in August 1890 and eventually secured one. He died in Jefferson County, Ohio, on August 18, 1898.
