September the 4th 1864
 
Dear beloved wife with the greatest of pleasure and mutch respect it is that I can enjoy the preasant oportunity of righting you a fiew lines for to pass the time away this is sunday and I just came from hearing the funeral of a man in Co B preached he was killed buy axident on the last raid there was several of them out killing hogs as we was coming back one evening and one of the boys shot at a hog and the man that was kill was just coming over the top of a little hill and the ball went through the hog and struck him in the head and he died in about 3 hours after he was shot he leaves a wife and 4 children / he belonged to Companey B of our regiment well Cordelia I cant think of mutch to right at preasant so I will quit righting until tomorow and then I will finish Cordelia I wish that I was at home with you today Oh how I would like to have spent this sabath day at home with you today But we are maney miles apart but I hope buy this time next year we will be permitted to see each other and spend the remainder of our days together 
 
September the 7th
On the steamer Kennett
Dear Beloved Wife with the greatest of pleasure it is that I have the privilige of finishing this letter well I comenced it while we was in camp at memphis and I was agoing to finish it the next day but the next day that was the 5th we was ordered to the boat we got on board the evening of the 5th and laid their until this morning We left Memphis this morning at sunrise we are on our way up the Mississippi to Cairo Illinois but where we will go from their is more than I can tell but it is rheumord that we will go to Nashville Tennessee and if we do we will go to / Lewisville Kentucky and then we will take the railroad from their But Cordelia I wish they would let us go home a fiew days while we are going so close home But I dont think that there is mutch sight of getting home this fall
 
Well Cordelia if we should stop at Cairo I will right you another letter thare you can not direct your letters to Memphis aney more nor I cant tell you yet where to direct your letters to yet But I will try and let you no in my next letter so nothing more But I still remain your Companion
