November the 30th 1864
On the Cumberlan river about
twenty five miles above the Fourt
Donalson Dear Beloved Wife with the greatest of pleasure and mutch respect it is that I can once more enjoy the privilige of righting you a fiew lines to let you know where we are this morning we are on the Cumberland river and in the state of Tennessee about 25 miles above Ft Donalson the talk is now that we are going to land at Nashville Tennessee if nothing hapens we will get their some time tonight we have a midling big fleet with us there is 12 or 14 boats loaded with soldiers. Well Cordelia I have got the jaw ake very bad my face is swelled so that I can hardley see out of one eye
Well Cordelia this is the 1st day of december and as I did not get to finish my letter yesterday I thought I would finish it this morning Well this morning finds us at [faded]ville Tenn we landed hear at about half past twelve oclock last night we are in camp about 2 miles from town and my face is some better this morning
General Thomas had a fight with old Hood yesterday about 25 miles from hear and the rebs were repulsed with a heavy loss I think about tomorow morning we will have to go to the front we have a very large armey hear now I dont no sertain but I think that the 11th Ind Cavalrey is out about 15 miles from hear / I am going to try and find out where Samuel is it may be that I may get to see him
Well Cordelia I have not mutch to right at preasant But I hope when those fiew lines comes to hand they will find you and them sweet little girls in the enjoyment of good health
